More Saftey Hints
Safety is a priority for everyone, particularly when you have a young family. Consider the following safety tips below:
Glass
One smoke alarm should be fitted on each floor of your home. For greater protection a smoke alarm can be fitted to every room except for the kitchen and bathroom. Try to fit interconnected alarms, so if a fire is detected on one floor, all the fire alarms will sound. Check the alarm every month and change the batteries every year. Also, vacuum and wipe the casing and slots to remove dust.
Glass
Ordinary glass is dangerous as it can break into many sharp pieces. Building regulations require safety glass to be fitted in glazed doors and windows below 80cm in height n new homes. Safety glass is safer as it is more difficult to break and it breaks in a safe manner. laminated and toughened glass are two types of safety glass. You may also purchase a safety film that will retain broken glass in one piece.
Medicine & Poison
Always store medicines and poisons out of sight and reach preferably under lock and key. Always replace the cap on medicine bottles as they have child resistant tops. never decant chemicals into jam jars or fizzy drinks bottles and do not store cleaners by the lavatory or on low shelves in the kitchen.
Safety Marks
All products sold in Europe need to comply with minimum safety standards. look for these signs to ensure that goods are up to safety standards :
Child Safety Seats - ECE R44.03
Children's Toys - EN71
High Chairs - BS 5799
Cots - EN716
Pushchairs & Prams - BS 7409
Smoke Alarms - BS 5446
Saftey Gates - EN 1930
Fireguards - BS 6539
Kite marks. Products with the kite mark have their production method inspected by the British Standards Institute (BSI). A requirement is that their production method are independently tested at regular intervals.
CE marks. Certain goods such as toys and electrical items have to be marked with CE to show that they pass European Standards. You should also look at all warnings that are written by the mark. Anything that looks like a toy, but does not have a CE mark should not be given to a child.
